Ukraine, US expected to sign mineral agreement today

Ukraine is expected to sign today the long-awaited agreement with the United States on developing mineral resources, high sources from the Ukrainian presidency report to AFP. According to AFP, the document envisions creating a joint investment fund in size “50/508x1> between Kiev and Washington.
On April 18th, the two sides signed a memorandum as a preliminary step towards this agreement. Ukrainian Prime Minister Denis Schmyhal has named the last version of the document as a “real partnership agreement” and has confirmed that the document will be signed “in the near future”, while two additional agreements will follow.
Shmyhal also stated that the agreement would have to be ratified by the Ukrainian Parliament, with consultations to be launched Thursday. He added that future US aid to Ukraine could be considered part of the US contribution to the joint investment fund.
Ukrainian officials hope that signing the deal, which has received US President Donald Trump's support, will also serve to strengthen Washington's support of Kiev.
According to Reuters, the text of the agreement has been significantly developed since the initial attempt to sign it in February, efforts that were accompanied by a heated debate at the Oval Office between President Trump, Senator JD Vance and Ukrainian President Volodyr Zelenskyy. /Periscope/
