Coal burning plants produce less than 20% of US electricity, compared to about 50% at the beginning of the century, according to the Energy Information Administration, as fracturing and other drilling techniques have increased natural gas production. Increasing solar and wind energy has also reduced the use of coal, reports Reuters, broadcast Periscope.
Trump, a Republican, campaigned with a promise to increase energy production in the US and has sought to give up energy and environmental regulations since taking office on January 20th.
He is scheduled to sign orders regarding energy at the White House at 1500. (1900 GMT), the White House said.
Actions would include efforts to save coal factories that were likely to retire, sources said, who demanded anonymity because they were not authorised to speak publicly.
Energy demand in the United States is growing for the first time in two decades, as intensive energy data centres for artificial intelligence, electric vehicles and cryptovalutes increase consumption.
Orders will direct Energy Secretary Chris Wright to determine whether the coal used in steel production is a critical “critical general”, the White House official said. He also instructs Interior Secretary Doug Burgum to accept the end of a mortorium that banned the rent of coal on federal grounds and to give priority to the rent of coal. /Periscope/
