Deputy Prime Minister Belinda Balluk as she presented the country's ambitious infrastructure transformation plan by 2035, said new highway and rail projects are at an advanced stage and the country is ready for a new era in transport.
Balluk said that from a chain neglected for decades, the country is already expected to have a 530km modern railway infrastructure connecting the north to the south, transforming the way citizens travel and the goods are transported.
If we speak of taking steps towards Europe, then we should operate with the same instruments as any European state. Railway transport is one of them”, Balluk said.
She suggested that, currently, more than 75% of the works on Tirana line have been completed. Balluk further assured that this project would be delivered by 2025 to follow up with the construction of stations and electrification.
In the spring of 2026 all components will be completed. Then we will have a completely new, efficient and affordable transport for each citizen's pocket”, the deputy prime minister stressed.
In the long-term plan, Balluk presented a clear vision of expanding the railway network across the territory with the project for Hoti's Vlora Railway, which he said works begin in the last quarter of 2025.
As soon as the work of the Durres/Rrogozhina railway will begin in early 2026, and its continuation from Rrogozhina to Pogradec will also be rebuilt, with works starting in 2028. Meanwhile, the creation of two internal lines is also planned, one that will connect the new industrial port of Porto Romano with the existing Tirana railway, and another for Vlora Airport, which will connect to the town through the train.
You can't build an airport and leave it connected only to automobile routes. Public transportation is the request of any tourist visiting Albania”, Balluk said.
The rehabilitation of the Rrogozhina Vlora is also envisioned in the government budget, as is presented by the major project “Redzi”, which runs through Shkodra and Gjakova, expected to create direct access to the 10th European Corridor through connection with Nis.
“This is no longer just a dream, but a concrete project that will give Albania a strategic position in the movement of goods in the Balkans and at the wider end of”, Balluk stressed.
