Dmitry Medvedev, Russia's former prime minister and current deputy president of the security council, said the newest NATO members -- including Sweden and Finland -- could face revenge attacks using nuclear weapons in the event of a conflict.
“The status of unannounced countries gave them (Finland and Sweden HINA TASS) some international priorities, given their geopolitical position and many other” factors, Medvedev said. “and now they are part of a block of hostility to us, which means they automatically became a target for our armed forces, including possible revenge attacks and even nuclear component or preventive measures within the framework of a military doctrine.”, reports The Telegraph.
Medvedev has named itself one of Russia's most vocal anti-Western opponents, repeatedly warning that Russia can respond to Western-backed attacks in Ukraine with nuclear weapons.
His comments came after Vladimir Putin announced a three-day surprise ceasefire to be held between May 8th and May 10th, when Russia celebrates the end of World War II.
Kremlin said on Tuesday that Kiev had not responded to the ceasefire offer and that it was not clear whether Ukraine would join the ceasefire.
“It was President Putin who repeatedly said Russia is ready, without any precondition, to start the negotiations process”, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters. We haven't heard an answer from the Kiev regime so far. ” /Periscope/
