Lami made guarantees for Britain's interest in the Western Balkan region during a visit to Kosovo on Wednesday, urging Kosovo and Serbia to make progress in normalisation talks, international news reports report, Associated Press.
David Lami was on the second day of a visit to Kosovo, where she met with senior officials, calling on Pristina to form a new cabinet soon after the country's February 9th parliamentary elections.
As Prime Minister Albin Kurti's Vetevendosje Movement won 48 seats in the 120-seat parliament, without a majority, writes the news.net.
Lami assured Kosovo officials that “The UK continues to play its essential role as a key friend and partner of this great nation”.
The secretary expressed support for Kosovo-Serbia normalisation talks facilitated by the EU.
“This is a region that matters for Britain”, he said at a conference after meeting with President Vjosa Osmani. “We want a stable and peaceful normalisation”, Lami said.
Otherwise Kosovo-Serbia relations still remain tense, and 14-year normalisation talks assisted by the EU have failed to make progress.
Meanwhile, the EU and the United States have asked Kosovo and Serbia on both sides to implement the agreements reached two years ago, which include Kosovo's commitment to creating a Serbian Majority Commission Association and Serbia's obligation to offer the de facto recognition of Kosovo.
