From today (Friday), citizens will pay up to 0.70 euros for the bread, instead of 0.050 euros as it used to be.
The chairman of the Gjakova Furnitors' Association, Genc Fetah, said this increase was inevitable, due to the rising prices of basic products used for preparing bread.
The price of flour, electricity, labour, taxes has all increased significantly. We could not avoid raising the price of bread. If we didn't raise it, we'd work at a loss”, Fetah told local television Tv Eye Vision.
He stressed that bakers have faced double increase in supply prices, while added that the decision on the new price has been taken in co-ordination with all municipality bakers, broadcasts Periscope.
Stately Mixed Reactions
The increase in the price of bread has triggered numerous reactions among the citizens of Gjakova. Many are concerned, stressing that the cost of living is increasing daily, while income remains the same.
The increase in bread prices, along with electricity growth, is affecting all products. It's getting harder and harder for us”, one citizen said.
Another citizen assessed the situation differently, saying that even bakers are not at fault because they are affected by the same price hikes. He also noted the problem of citizen abuse of bread.
We don't know the value of bread. You find it in the container. The increase is mostly hitting pensioners and households in social assistance”.
Citizens hope that the increase in the price of bread will not be followed by further increases in basic products, as this would add to the family basket of consumers in Gjakova and beyond.
