Osmani: We have the law on lifting tariffs to the United States, but we need to negotiate the Assembly.

Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani has said the Presidency Office has prepared a law that would enable the removal of 10 per cent tariffs to goods imported by the US, but that for the adoption of this law the new Assembly should initially be introduced. We have the law ready [...]

We have the law ready to propose to the Parliament as it is constitutional. I have discussed with many deputies, I am convinced that it will pass”, Osmani said. in an interview for RTV 21.

On April 3rd, Osmani had asked the government to suspend the 10 per cent customs fee for goods from the US, a day after US President Donald Trump had imposed similar fees on imports from Kosovo.

Trump's decision included tariffs to most countries of the world with a base fee of 10 percent, but higher for countries with which the US has trade deficits.

But, incumbent Finance Minister Hekuran Murati had criticised President Osmani's approach, saying that the <x0 fiscal policies fall in the area of executive activity” and that these issues should be addressed away from the media.

This had prompted reaction by President Osmani's media adviser Bekim Kupina, who had named Murat “shameful and scandalous”, follows. Periscope.

Osmani said this dispute between Kosovo state institutions has damaged “the interest of the Republic of Kosovo extremely”.

The response was a major damage to Kosovo, because Kosovo had an extraordinary moment to empower the alliance with America, at a moment when it was essential for America to know who the first state is to come up with such a proposal. And I was the president of the first state to come out with that proposal and it was important that we go out first, said Osmani.

The 10 per cent fee to US imports as the fee Kosovo sets to all countries with which there is no deal on free market is still in place, even though Murati had said the government has been considering the removal of this tax for the US for a long time.

Meanwhile, Osmani said she is working intensively with American President Donald Trump's administration.

There are a series of steps that we have already taken, which are under way and that I cannot currently make public because they are being examined by the Trump administration”, Osmani added.

She also said she hopes the new Kosovo Assembly will be constitutionalised as soon as it is in the country's interest.

Kosovo has many jobs that must be carried out urgently and the Assembly is necessary for such a thing. That's why I stand in hopes that April 15th will be a successful day for all of Kosovo”, she said.

Tomorrow is scheduled for Constituent Assembly sessions, where the framework of the ninth legislature released from the 9 February elections will be tried. The PDK, which emerged as the second party in the elections, has said it will participate in this session.

The LVV, which has won 48 seats in the Assembly, has the right to propose the chief parliament. The Constituent hearing, scheduled for Tuesday, is considered closed only after the mayor and vice-presidents are elected, and new MPs have taken the oath. 61 votes are required for the president's vote.

Only after that will the LVV be able to continue with efforts to form the new Government, for which 61 votes are also required. Earlier Monday, however, the acting minister for the Communists and Kthim, Nenad Rassic, told reporters that he is not optimistic that on Tuesday he will be voted for the new Government of Kosovo.

Osmani said Kosovo needs stable government, but that it is up to political parties, not them, to decide on this process.

In the interview for Anjuta RTV 21, Osmani also commented on the recent recognition of Kosovo's independence by Sudan, which Serbia had questioned over “the capacity of the current Sudan government to make decisions of vital importance for international relations”.

Osmani said that during her stay in Turkey, diplomatic Forum in Antalya agreements have been reached with other states as well.

But we agreed that the process will be formalised further, [with states] which I would not like to mention here because it is important that we do not risk those processes”, Osmani said.

Among these countries with which Kosovo is working to gain formal recognition of independence, Osman mentioned Syria.

“We as institutions have never sought diplomatic relations with that regime [ Bashar al-Assad], but now with the institutions of free Syria, of course we hope that this process will be negotiated and completed as soon as we can, Osmani said. /REL
