Left organisations say more than 500,000 people are expected to take to the streets to protest in Washington, DC, Florida and elsewhere across the country on Saturday to oppose the authoritarian “andand backed by billionaires” and Donald Trump.
Move On, one of the organisations that are planning the day of protest and calling Hands Off, along with dozens of working, environmental and other progressive groups, said more than 1,000 protests are planned throughout the United States, including in state capitals, says The Guardian, broadcasts Periscope.
This is being formed to make the biggest one day protest in recent years of American history”, said Ezra Levin, a founder of the Invisible, one of the groups planning the event, in a recent organisational call.
The biggest event is expected to be at National Mall in Washington DC, where members of Congress -- including the Democrat Jamie Raskin from Maryland, Maxwell Frost from Florida and Ilhan Omar from Minnesota -- is scheduled to speak before crowds.
“This is a nationwide mobilization to prevent the most brazen kidnapping of power in modern history”, the protest website said.
“Trump, Musk and their billionaire friends are orchestrating an all-out attack on our government, our economy and our basic rights, granted by Congress at any step on the ground”.
“They want to merge America for parts of social security offices, dismissal of essential employees, elimination of consumer protection, and destruction of Medicaid all to finance their billionaire tax fraud. They are handing out their tax dollars, our public services and our democracy to the ultra-rich. If we don't fight now, there will be nothing to save”.
Protests come after the stock market fell this week after the proclamation of tariffs from Trump on April 1st. Despite the economic consequences, Trump said on Friday: my “policies will never change”.
Trump's approval rate this week dropped to 43%, its lowest since taking office, according to a Reuters survey.
After Trump was first elected to the White House in 2016, at least 440,000 people -- three times the crowd in the inauguration of Trump -- joined the Women's Marching Protest in Washington, DC, and millions of others gathered all over the country, making it the largest day protest in U.S. history.
