Several people have been killed when a driver crashed a car into a crowd during a festival Saturday in the Canadian town of Vancouver, local police said, The Guardian reported.
“A number of people were killed and several others were injured”, sent to Vancouver internet police. “The driver is in custody”.
A witness told CTV News that he saw a black vehicle moving disorderly in the festival area shortly before the clash with the crowd occurred.
The Vancouver Sun newspaper reported that thousands of people were in the area.
I didn't see the driver, I just heard the sound of the engine”, said Yoseb Vardeh, a food truck operator, in an interview for Postmedia.
I went out of my truck, looked down the road and saw bodies everywhere”, Vardeh said with his trembling voice. “It went through the entire block, went straight through”.
The event took place shortly after 8:00 p.m. near East 41st Avenue and Fraser Street, while members of the Filipino community were gathered to celebrate Lapdu's Day, said the mayor of the town of Vancouver, Ken Sim.
The festival commemorates an anti-kolonialist leader from the 16th century.
Police said the incident occurred shortly after 8:00 local time in the city's Sunset on Fraser district.
Our thoughts are with all the affected and with Vancouver's Filipino community at this extremely difficult time”, Sim wrote.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said: “We're all in mourning with you”./Periscopi/
