Close to 270 additional troops were deployed this week in support of NATO's peacekeeping mission in Kosovo.
KFOR announced that these troops are from the operational reserves of Albania, Bulgaria, Greece and Romania.
KFOR said dislocated personnel will operate on temporary basis, along with 200 reserve forces that have already been deployed to Kosovo by the Italian brigade “Sasari”
These reinforcements, along with KFOR troops, enhance KFOR's ability to respond to any development in the security situation in accordance with its long term in the UN, based on UN Security Council Resolution 1244, say KFOR.
And good co-operation with KFOR members has Kosovo Police.
“We have very good co-operation with KFOR, if their number is added and they are in the north of the country, we have very good co-operation with them, there is nothing to emphasize to me except that we are really partners with them, even an added value for the north for KFOR troops to be here”, said Kosovo Police Deputy Director for the northern region Veton Elshani.
The security recogniser, Birzen Soopyan, says this increase of NATO troops is taking place on the basis of estimates KFOR itself made on the ground.
“Based on periodic assessments made by KFOR and NATO itself for the security situation, and we are seeing that not only in the region but also in the international arena, global we have if we can say a deterioration of the security situation in general. We are seeing that there are significant developments in Europe too”, Soopyan told Teve1.
According to him, the main goal is to prevent tensions, but also as a message to Serbia in case it is trying, to raise tensions.
The goal is to prevent the escalation of any deterioration in the security situation and to send messages to actors with particular emphasis, is to Serbia”.
KFOR is the third security reacter in Kosovo, following Kosovo Police and EULEX. Mission NATO, among other things, is responsible for the security of the border line between Kosovo and Serbia.
KFOR has increased its presence every time the situation has been tense in Kosovo, as was the armed attack on Zvecan Banjska in September 2023./Periscopi/
