The Cultural Heritage Inspectorate again came out on Tuesday to ban works on “George Bush” Square in the capital, broadcast Periscope.
Imer Hakaj, director of the Cultural Heritage Inspectorate under the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, said that because of this project, there has started to be pressure and citizens also write privately.
He said that according to the maps, in the works that are being done, there is more authorisation.
May they stay on the clock from today and do their job. This municipality has submitted a request and is required to wait for the request to meet the documentation and step back because it has been passed on personal. People have started writing to me in private. I guarantee no one from the central level has ever called me. Not this approach. I'm not here to push myself. I'm inviting you to the decision, according to the maps we have, we're reported to have exceeded authorisation”, Hakaj said.
On the other hand, Pristina Deputy Chairman Rock Manaj blamed the Institute for protecting monuments for the situation created regarding the project in George Bush” Square.
“Institute for Protection of Monuments is guilty of why we are here today, because it is not doing its job, it is not considering the application and project of the Pristina Community with professionalism, but it is doing politics. We're not making politics here. We are implementing this project on the ground for the interest of the citizens of Pristina and asking us institutions not to make politics with projects”, Manaj said.
A day earlier, the Pristina municipality resumed work today at “George Bush” Square, despite twice the ban on works by the Cultural Heritage Inspectorate, urging the municipality that the subject for permission equipment from the Kosovo Institute for Protection of Monuments (IKMM) be completed.
Days ago, Pristina Chairman Progress Rama has said that the ban on the work is illegal and that “the reasons for this intervention are groundless by institutions that must be independent and are being used for political purposes”.
According to him, the move is deliberate intervention, which violates Pristina's right to sustainable urban and cultural development.
The Pristina municipality project is worth 18.4m euros.
