Speaking at the European Parliament, von der Leeyen stressed that the EU prefers a negotiated solution to trade disputes, but is willing to protect its interests and European companies, broadcasts Periscope.
She also noted that US-set tariffs increase costs for American consumers and producers, potentially leading to job losses.
These comments come after US President Donald Trump's administration's decision to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, as well as planning for higher tariffs on imported vehicles.
Von der Leeyen emphasised the importance of the EU's common market as a powerful tool for economic growth and the protection of common European interests and values.
