A US immigration judge decided on Friday that Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil could be deported, allowing President Donald Trump's administration to continue with its efforts to evacuate Columbia University student from the United States a month after his arrest in New York City.
Judge Jamie Comans' decision of the LaSalle Migration Court in Louisiana was not a final definition of Khalil's fate. But he represented a significant victory for the republican president in his efforts to expel pro-Palestinian foreign students in the United States and, like Khalil, are not charged with any crime, reports Reuters, broadcast Periscope.
Citing the 1952 Migration and Community Act, the State Secretary appointed by Trump, Marco Rubio, determined last month that Khalil could harm American foreign policy interests and that he should be deported for his speech and activism “otherwise legitimate”.
Comans said he did not have the authority to cancel a state secretary. The judge denied a motion by Khalil's lawyers to call Rubio and ask him for the “reasonable” he had for his definition under 1952 law.
The judge's decision came after a 90-minute combat hearing held in a court located within a prison complex for migrants surrounded by razor wire with double sieges led by private government contractors in rural Louisiana. /Periscope/
