Zelensky's visit takes place a day before talks between Ukraine's delegations and the United States in Germany, Saudi Arabia, talks aimed at ending Russia's three-year war in Uriana.
The US, Kiev's top military supporter, is aiming to end the conflict soon, holding direct talks with Moscow, while Washington has suspended military assistance and sharing intelligence information with Ukraine.
US-Ukrainian talks on 11 March will be the first formal talks since the crash in the Oval Office between Zelensky, US President Donald Trump, and Vice President JD Vance on 28 February. After the public crash, the Ukrainian president was asked to leave the White House.
Zelensky has said he will not be part of US-Ukrainian talks in Jedda. The Ukrainian delegation will include Foreign Minister Andri Syhbisa, Zelensky's chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, and Defence Minister Rustem Umerov.
They will meet with the US delegation, which is expected to include Trump's Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and National Security Adviser Mike Waltz. Rubio left for Saudi Arabia on the evening of March 9th.
“We are fully committed to a constructive dialogue and hope to discuss and agree on the necessary decisions and steps”, Zelensky wrote on March 9th on X. There are realistic proposals on the table. The key is to act quickly and effectively”.
Kiev will likely propose a peace plan drafted by Zelensky, which includes an air and maritime agreement as a first step.
Zelensky is facing great pressure from Washington to quickly reconcile a ceasefire agreement with Russia, despite the US's failure to pledge security guarantees. But, so far Moscow has shown no interest in stopping the hostilities.
Russia has intensified attacks on its neighbour, and it has reportedly made progress on the battlefield in recent days.
On March 9th, Trump suggested Ukraine may not be able to survive the war against Russia, even with US support.
In an interview for Fox News, Trump defended his decision to reduce support for Ukraine by saying: “Well, they may still not survive [war]”.
Trump has also reiterated his claim that Zelensky is not “ungrateful for US support, but described Ukrainian President “as wise” and strong “”. / REL/
