It addressed European Union lawmakers until talks are held between the Ukrainian and American sides on the issue of war with Russia, The Guardian reported.
Von der Leyen also spoke of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“Some believed Russia could integrate into Europe's economic and security architecture. Others hoped we could rely indefinitely on full US protection. And so I lower my guard. The timing of illusions has ended”, it is expressed.
Von der Leyen argued that the recent decisions of EU leaders were unprecedented “and <x1-seconds entirely unthinkable”, until he spoke of a new urgency to operate and re-armed Europe.
“We need an increase in European defence, and we need it now...Putin has testified repeatedly that it is a hostile neighbour. He can't be trusted. He can only stumble”, she said.
The European Commission president has added that Ukraine should be offered strong security races, but “Europe also has to go beyond this”. /Cohanet/
