A volcano in eastern Indonesia, on the resort island of Flores, erupted again Thursday evening, forcing authorities to raise the alarm level to the maximum.
The outbreak of the Levotobi Laki-Laki 1703m high lasted 11 minutes and 9 seconds. The jump reached an altitude of 8,000m above its top, the Indonesian volcano agency said.
The blast began at 22:56 local time. So far, no damage reported in nearby villages, but the service warned residents that the threat of volcanic mud exists because of heavy rainfall.
The blast was accompanied by severe shocks heard up to the city of Maume, located more than 50 miles [80 km] from the volcano, as well as in the Laratuka region, 30 miles [50 km] west of the mountain
Authorities have banned access to a 7-8-mile radius around the volcano. Lucky-Laki Levotby reactivated last November. Nine people were then killed, dozens of international flights to Bali resort island were canceled, and thousands of residents were forced to flee their villages. Name “Laki-Laki” means <x2 source” in Indonesian. Laki-Laki also has a “binjak”, but more relaxed, whose name means “gahu”.
