The Ukrainian delegation is led by President Voldymyr Zelensky's Chief of Staff, Andriy Yermak, and includes Foreign Minister Andri Syhbiza, Defence Minister Rustem Umrov, and Zelensky's deputy chief of staff, Pavlo Palisa. Also present at the meeting are Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, and National Security Councillor Musad Al Ayhan.
Ukraine has voiced its commitment to having a constructive <x0-ton” during the talks, leaving behind the debate at the White House. The American side appreciates the positive meeting, but stresses that discussions will be difficult and with numerous challenges.
The meeting is being held at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Jeddah. The BBC writes that part of the discussions are important issues such as “security protocols” and “territorial issues”. These discussions can be translated as an opportunity to consider what America is willing to offer for Ukraine, in exchange for which Ukraine may be willing to make some compromises regarding territories it can offer Russia.
Ukraine has voiced reluctance to enter into details, but is obliged to engage in these talks due to continued US military support.
In this context, Ukraine is seeking a security guarantee from America, which would include a commitment to intervention in the event Russia attacks again after signing a ceasefire. However, the White House has so far refused to offer such guarantees.
After this meeting in Saudi Arabia, US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff can travel to Moscow for a possible meeting with Vladimir Putin at the end of the week. /euronews
