Croatia has faced its first major obstacle to joining the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), following a change in US foreign policy under Donald Trump. Due to the conflict between the US and the European Union on tariffs, Croatia's entry into the OECD (the Organisation for Co-operation and Economic Development) has been temporarily suspended, writes Euronews.
The vote has been postponed and the Croatian government ensures everything will go according to plan, Jutarnji list reports.
In 19 of the OECD's 25 committees, Croatia has closed accession talks and progressed faster than expected in negotiations. But when the order of the trade committee came, the vote was postponed until a second announcement.
Voting on the Trade Committee will take place when conditions are appropriate. We're working with our American partners and O ECD on all issues related to our entry into OECD”, said Zdenko Lucianic, state adviser to the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs.
He added that Croatia still has much work to do, as it wants to wrap up the debate on the six remaining commissions by the end of the year.
For the moment, everything is happening according to plan, and it remains access to the OECD by the middle of next year”, Lucian explained.
However, this is not the only complication in recent US-Croatia relations. An agreement on avoidance of double taxation, which until recently seemed reachable, has not yet been put on the agenda. A republican senator who deals especially with relations with Croatia explains:
I'm afraid the problem was in Congress, and also changes to our Treasury Department. When it first opened in 2022, it was another administration that did not want to make changes”, David Joyce said.
