This is the first time the US will have an official language at the country level, even though about 30 states have their official language defined.
“From the establishment of our Republic, English has been used as our national language”, Trump said in the order issued on March 1st.
Our nation's top historical documents, including the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, are all written in English. So it is time for the English language to be declared official in the United States”.
A certain language at the country level is at the heart of a united society and cohesive, and the US is strengthened by a citizen who can freely exchange ideas into a common language”.
Some activists have expressed concerns about the impact this provision may have on non- English people, separately on immigration issues, voting procedures and assistance approaches.
The decision abolishs a order by former President Bill Clinton, who sought from government agencies and organisations that received federal funds to offer linguistic assistance to non- English-speaking people.
The decision will allow these agencies and organisations to choose whether to offer documents and services in other languages.
The order says that the agency's “leaders are not obliged to change, avert or prohibit the production of documents, products or other prepared or offered services in other languages”.
According to the U.S. Government website, people in the United States communicate in more than 350 languages. According to the U.S. Record Bureau, the languages spoken mostly are Spanish, Chinese, Tagalog, Vietnamese, and Arabic. And some of the languages of autonomous Americans are among the languages spoken in the United States.
“The English language possession does not only open economic doors, but helps new residents engage in their communities, participate in national traditions and contribute to our society”, Trump said.
This order recognizes and celebrates the recent tradition of the multilingualism of American citizens who have learned English, and this tradition has been forwarded to their children for generations to come”. / REL/
