Donald Trump has said he's very nervous “with Vladimir Putin for questioning the Ukraine leadership.
In a sharp shift of tone to Moscow, the American president told an NBC reporter he was nervous about his Russian counterpart's doubts about Wolfymyr Zelensky's credibility, writes The Guardian., broadcast Periscope.
“If Russia and I fail to make an agreement on stopping the bloodshed in Ukraine, even if I think it was Russia's fault, which may not be, but if I think it was Russia's fault, I will place secondary tariffs on oil, above all the oil coming out of Russia”, he said.
The escalating sanctions against Russia “means that if you buy oil from Russia, you cannot do business in the United States,” he said. “will have a minimum of 25% above all... above all oil, a fee of 25 to 50 points above all oil”.
Trump said he plans to speak to Putin next week.
He hinted Putin's call for a new leadership in Ukraine would mean a peace deal could be delayed. The new Lidership means you won't have a deal for a long time, right?
If I feel, if we're in the middle of a negotiation, you can say I was very angry, frustrated, when Putin said yesterday that... you know, when Putin started to get into Zelensky's credibility, because that's not going in the right direction, you know?
Trump's comments come after months of criticism that the administration is undergoing Russian aggression in Ukraine to stop the three-year war. He has previously criticised Zelensky, saying he was tired of the way he was dealing with the war and calling him a dictator for failing to hold new elections.
Trump said he spoke to Putin “not long ago” and has expressed his anger, but that despite his feelings, there is “a very good relationship with him”.
Trump also used his interview for NBC to threaten Iran with punishment if it fails to reach an agreement with Washington on its nuclear programme.
If they don't make a deal, there will be shelling”, he said, adding that he will also place them “secondary budget”.
