During the trip, Rubio will meet with Ukrainian officials “to advance the president's goal of ending the Russian-Ukrainian war”, according to State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce.
The meeting in Saudi Arabia comes as the two countries work to restore their relations to solid ground after last month's outbreak at the Oval Office between US President Donald Trump, US Vice President JD Vance and Ukrainian President Volody Zelensky.
Trump's special envoy for the Middle East, Steve Whitoff, told reporters earlier that American and Ukrainian officials plan to meet this week in Saudi Arabia.
Well, President Zelensky sent a letter to the president. I think the president thought it was a really good, positive first step... And I think the idea is to reach a framework for a peace agreement and an initial 148x1> ceasefire, Wetkoff said.
Rubio's other meetings: Bruce also announced that Rubio will meet with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman “to discuss ways to advance common interests in the region and strengthen US-Saudi” relations. The Kingdom has been host to key US talks on both the Ukrainian conflict and the Middle East war.
Rubio will then travel to Charlevux, Canada, to meet with his G7 counterparts at the G7 Foreign Ministers' meeting. Bruce said the discussions would focus on conflicts in the Middle East and Europe, co-operation in Africa and Indo-Peacenaire, and stability in the Western Hemisphere”.
