Trump has threatened to deploy a 25% tariff on imports from two US neighbours. Lutnick confirmed on Sunday that the tariffs will be implemented as planned, but accurate details will depend on negotiations.
Meanwhile, a 10% fee for Chinese imports is also expected to go into effect, as part of measures against what the US considers a lack of action by Beijing to stop the phantanyli flow towards America. If these measures are implemented, tariffs on Chinese exports to the US will reach 20%, including an existing 10% fee set a month ago.
Chinese state media have reported that Beijing has prepared a series of countermass, increasing the risk of a widespread trade struggle between the two economic superpowers. According to the state newspaper Global Times, revenge measures could target American agricultural and food products.
Analysts estimate that China still intends to avoid a full trade fight and negotiate a ceasefire with the Trump administration, but so far there has been no sign of an agreement between the two countries. Trump has repeatedly declared that tariffs are an effective tool to correct trade inequalities and protect production in the US.
Canada has sharply rejected tariffs, stressing that they would harm both economies. Canadian Interior Trade Minister Anita Anand has held meetings with officials in Washington and has warned a harsh response.
“We are prepared for every event, but we will protect our economy at every step,” said Anand for CBC News.
Last month, Canada prepared a list of US goods worth 30 billion dollars that could be hit with revenge fees. This list includes daily products such as pasta, clothing, and perfumes.
In addition to measures against Canada, Mexico and China, Trump has also announced a 25% fee for steel and aluminum imports, which will take effect on 12 March. Also, it has threatened customs duties <x0reciproke” for individual countries and a 25% fee for the European Union.
