Sea transport security on the Black Sea has been the subject of talks held this Monday between Russian and American delegations to Saudi Arabia. The news was confirmed by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
He stressed that this was a proposal by President Trump, which Putin agreed to. Peskov also added that Russia and the United States are willing to advance towards a peaceful solution to the Ukrainian issue.
Ukraine, a major exporter of wheat and corn, has had a significant impact on global markets before Russia's invasion, exporting about 6.5 million tonnes of products every month. After fighting, these exports dropped significantly, causing price hikes and especially hitting poorer countries.
The Black Sea maritime transport safety agreement, reached in July 2022, enabled the passage of cargo ships from Ukraine's ports to a 574km secure corridor during the Black Sea, to the Bosphorus Strait, providing an easing of restrictions and sanctions. After completing this agreement, Ukraine established a temporary export corridor in August 2023, exploiting the western coastline.
Dmytro Pletenchuk, spokesman for the Ukrainian Navy, has stressed that Ukraine continues to maintain control over the situation at sea, and has added that today's talks are not expected to bring substantial changes. On the other hand, Ukrainian opposition MP Olexiy Goncharenko has estimated that a sea truce could benefit Russia, but has added that if a ban on assault on portal infrastructure is involved and the ban on the use of missiles by Russian warships, this could be considered a positive step. /Eureonews/ Periscopi/
