Prince Frederic of Luxembourg died on February 28th after years of being diagnosed with a rare mitocondrial illness, according to a statement issued over the weekend by his parents, Prince Robert and Princess Julie.
He was 22, writes NBC News.
Frederick has been born with PolG, a mitocolorial genetic disorder that prevents body cells from producing enough energy, which may, in turn, cause failure and failure of many organs. He was diagnosed with PolG at the age of 14, when his symptoms began to manifest more clearly, Prince Robert and Princess Julie said in Saturday's statement.
