Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has dismissed the head of the country's security service for failing to prevent the October 7th 2023 attack by Hamas.
The Israeli cabinet met on Thursday evening to formally approve Ronen Bar's early dismissal, which was appointed in October 2021 for a five-year term as Shin Bet chief, broadcasts Periscope.
Netanyah announced days ago his intention to dismiss Bar, saying that there is a constant distrust among them that had grown over time.
The move sparked anger and further sparked antigovernmental demonstrations in Jerusalem, which saw thousands of Israelites join forces with protesters who opposed Israel's new attack on Gaza.
Shin Bet is Israel's internal intelligence agency and plays a key role in the war. Its activities and membership are well preserved state secrets.
About 1,200 people were killed and 251 were taken hostage during the October 7th 2023 attacks. Israel responded with a massive military offensive, which has killed more than 48,500 Palestinians.
