Secretary - General NATO Mark Rutte stressed on Wednesday that the transatlantic military alliance would respond to an attack with a “full force”.
“When it comes to the protection of Poland and the general protection of NATO's territory, if someone was to miscalculate and think that he could escape an attack on Poland or any other ally, they would face the full force of this harsh alliance”, Rutte said at a press conference with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk during a visit to Warsaw, reports “Politcox<3>, broadcast. Periscope.
Our response will be devastating. This should be clear to Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin and anyone else who wants to attack us”, Rutte added, praising Poland for spending 4.7 percent of its gross domestic production in defence, the highest level in the alliance.
Let's not forget that Russia is and remains the most important and dark threat to our alliance. Let's not forget Russia is heading towards a war economy”, Rutte said.
Tusk underlined NATO's importance to his country's security. “is very important for us [to hear] the commitment that NATO will protect Poland in any critical situation”, he said, referring to Article 5 of the alliance's joint defence.
This reconfirmation comes after growing concern within the alliance over the dedication of US President Donald Trump to NATO and its contempt and top officials to Europe.
However, Rutte insisted that the transatlantic relationship between the United States and Europe is “the feature of our alliance, and this is not changing”.
Tusk and Rutte will both go to Paris, where French President Emmanuel Macron is hosting European leaders for another summit in Ukraine on Thursday.
