The doctor at Rome's hospital, Sergio Alfier, said that the pope, after a respiratory crisis on 28 February, had further problems and was almost overwhelmed by vomiting.
“There was a real danger that he could not afford”, the doctor said.
He stressed that doctors should then choose a further course of treatment.
We had to decide whether to stop and leave or move forward with all available drugs and therapies, facing the risk of damage to other organs. Finally, we decided to continue”, he added.
The 88-year-old Pope was released from the hospital Sunday after the worst health crisis during his 12 years of papacy.
He was admitted to the Gemeli Hospital on February 14 because of a bronze attack that took place in a double pneumonia, an especially difficult condition for him, since in his youth he had a poplar and had a piece of a lung removed.
Pope Francis has been recommended that he rest for another two months after leaving the hospital for full recovery.
