In an interview for Slovenian media “RTV SLO” Kos spoke of tensions in the Western Balkans and the challenges facing the European Union.
In one of her tweets, Kos stressed the values of democracy, solidarity and the rule of law.
EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos said that European Union enlargement was a geopolitical issue and not only a technical process, adding that Albania could cross the finish line by the end of 2027.
The Western Balkans are in first place. Personally, it really hurts me that the enlargement process in the Western Balkans hasn't happened in so many years”, the EU commissioner said.
“Two countries are in charge, one is Montenegro, with which we can complete negotiations by the end of 2026 and then depend on member states how long it will be for ratification”, Kos said.
“At present, Albania is in second place, which can cross the finish line at the end of 2027”, she added.
About a thousand people work for a candidate country in Brussels, out of all fields. These are technical skills, but eventually they will decide member states”, Kos said.
And I'm aware of the enormous importance of communication, since I can't imagine that after all negotiations in a member state, we should say no and that we don't want this country in the European Union. We will also have to do a lot of work in this” field, she said.
Kos said this was the first time negotiations were under way with a country in the war with Ukraine and that foreign forces were trying to prevent the enlargement process.
She estimated that the EU should also respond to global security, defence and stability issues.
Kos said he believes Serbia is at a standstill on its European path, and that the protests showed that people want change.
Serbia is standing on its European road” and Kos has said after meeting with President Aleksandar Vuciq in Brussels.
After mass protests, Kos said the EU was with the people. “The EU will provide an additional 16m euros to non-governmental organisations in Serbia”, Kos said.
