Kurteshi's language Reagon Network SafeJournalists: Threatening rhetoric by a public official puts Kosovo journalists at risk

The Sefe Journalists network strongly condemns the threatening and deignive language used by Sami Kurteshi, member of the Central Election Commission (KQZ), against the Association of Kosovo Journalists (AGK) and the Kosovo Women Reporters Network ( RGGGK). “We call on relevant institutions to take immediate measures to ensure the protection of journalists and freedom of [...]
“We call on relevant institutions to take immediate measures to ensure the protection of journalists and media freedom. ”
In a public statement, Kurteshi called AGK and RGGK a “Alliance of Criminal Groups”. Such encouraging language delegates the vital work of journalists' organisations, exposes them to potential risks and creates a hostile environment for media professionals, especially for women journalists who already face threats.
“We are shocked that the ruling party, Vetevendosje, continues to remain indifferent to the scandalous behaviour of its member in the Central Election Commission, Sami Kurteshi, towards the media and journalists” states Xhemajl Rexha, chairman of the AGK board. “The charges are very disturbing and endanger journalists' safety. VV has to dismiss Kurteshi from this important state institution immediately.”
Kurteshi is a senior public official, appointed to an essential institution for Kosovo's democratic integrity. His words are of great weight and should be seriously addressed by law enforcement authorities.
The Safe Journalists network calls on the State Attorney to investigate Sami Kurteshi's statements. If he possesses any evidence that supports his accusations, they should be formally examined. If not, his baseless accusations should be publicly condemned, as tolerating such a rhetoric creates a dangerous precedent and further endangers media professionals.
Allowing baseless and slanderous attacks by public officials contributes to the creation of a climate of fear and autocensure. This undermines journalists' ability to act freely and safely, putting democracy and public interest at risk.
We call on Prime Minister Albin Kurti and the ruling party to distance themselves from Kurteshi's dangerous rhetoric and publicly condemn it. Political leaders must ensure that their officials are not involved in verbal attacks that endanger journalists.
The Sefe Journalists network expresses full solidarity with AGK and RGGGK and will inform national and international actors of this disturbing development.
Any attack on journalists is an attack on democracy, public interest and fundamental human rights.
