Germany approves Ukraine's 3 billion-euro aid package

Germany's budget committee has paved the way for Ukraine's new military aid package worth 3 billion euros after the incoming Chancellor Friedrich Merz is pushing ahead to boost defence investments.

The two chambers of Parliament earlier this week approved the plan of Merzi conservatives and Social Democrats, who are holding talks on the formation of the new German government, REL reports, broadcast Periscope.

The Committee's decision on the budget was confirmed by Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock.

The 3 billion-euro package includes 2.547 billion from the Ministry of Finance, which will be extended to Ukraine this year, completed by other contributions, including a write-off by the European Peace Mechanism.

EU vows to continue Ukrainian arming

The German Finance Ministry also plans to authorise 8.252 billion euros in military aid to Ukraine for the period from 2026 to 2029, making the total aid to reach 11 billion euros.

“It was time for the parliamentary Committee to pave the way for the use of funds, and Germany is now setting the pace for Europe's support for Ukraine, Baerbox said through a statement.

The Ukraine military situation has become more difficult in recent months”, she added.

Members of the European Union, whose leaders gathered this week to discuss aid to Ukraine, are under pressure to demonstrate their commitment to Ukraine, which is facing Russian invasion, as uncertainty is growing over the future of security guarantees from the United States under Donald Trump's leadership.
