Officials have said it is unclear whether other people are involved in the attack, while police have called on local residents to stay at home.
The incident has occurred as crowds gathered in western Germany's banks to hold parades marking the carnival season.
Local media have reported that a black car has been launched at high speed towards a group of people who were headed from Paradeplatz Square to a historic area of the city.
Security has become disturbing in Germany, following a host of attacks that have occurred in recent weeks, including deadly car attacks on crowds in December in Magdeburg and Munich a month ago, just as in Manheim, in May 2024.
Police are in a state of alert in the period of holding parades this year, following some accounts on social networks, linked to the extremist Islamic state group, have been called for attacks on organisations in Kiln and Nuremberg.
