NATO may be on the verge of dissolution, said James Stavridis, retired Admiral of the United States Navy, amid concerns about the change in attitudes of the United States towards the transatlantic alliance.
Speaking to CNN, Admiral Stavridis, who headed NATO's European Command from 2009 to 2013, warned that the alliance may be experiencing its last “” and that a new organisation, called the “European Treaty Organisation” (ETO), could come out instead.
Uncertainty started by former President Donald Trump's repeated demands that European countries increase their defence spending.
His recent clash with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during a high profile meeting at the Oval Office has raised even more concerns among NATO members.
“We can be seeing the last days of NATO,” said Admiral Stavridis. “This is a fundamental issue the United States will remain with a democracy under attack, or will it line up with Moscow's authoritarian regime? This division threatens to divide the alliance beyond Ukraine and raises questions if the United States can still be trusted as a security partner. ”
His comments come at a time when Secretary General NATO, together with President Zelensky and other European leaders, are gathering for a summit in London.
The meeting, initiated by British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, aims to inform European allies of discussions with Trump.
Finally, discussions dominated the tense meeting at the White House between Trump and Zelensky.
Zelensky had travelled to Washington to finalise a deal on critical minerals, but the talks reportedly failed when the Ukrainian leader clashed with President Trump and JD Vice President Vance on the American administration's new approach to Russia.
Speculations were added if Trump, if he returned to office, would withdraw the US from NATO. Throughout his political career, he has exerted pressure on coalition members to fulfill their commitment to accommodating two per cent of the BPV for defence.
