The Kosovo Food and Veterinary Agency (AUV) has established measures for cargo with animal origin, animal and living birds from Albania's Durres area, after the first case with bird flu was confirmed there, known as H5N1.
AUV says it is in constant contact with Albania's National Veterinary Authority and Plant Protection to get up-to-date information on the zoonotic situation concerning the presence of bird flu, subnip H5N1.
Currently, a farm near Durres has been identified as affected by this disease.
“in line with legislation in force and in co-operation with Albanian authorities, AUV has imposed immediate border control measures. Border veterinarian inspectors have been ordered to conduct detailed checks on burdens of animal-born food products, as well as on living animals or birds, implementing exacting the procedures for checking to prevent possible spread of the disease in our country”.
“At the moment, the bird flu situation remains limited to an isolated farm, while Albanian authorities have taken immediate measures to isolate the area and prevent internal circulation. The deployment of restrictive measures for general import is not needed, as Kosovo has no import of live birds from this area. Currently, the risk of spreading H5N1 flu through import remains low. However, AUV is in a state of readiness and will adapt the measures according to the development of the” situation, AUV said in a media report.
The agency said that poultry farmers should immediately implement biosecurity measures on their farms to prevent the spread of bird flu (Avian Influenza).
Through relevant associations, AUV said all commercial farmers have been announced for biosecurity protection measures, which are essential for protecting their birds.
According to this agency, activating the system of self - control and implementing the safety measures on the farm are the most efficient ways to cope with the disease.
Bird flu spreads mainly by migratory birds, which makes it challenging for any country to prevent it. Therefore, the cooperation of farmers and the implementation of appropriate measures is crucial to the protection of farms and the bird sector in the country.
