According to Plerata Sejdiu, chairman of the Kosovo Medical Oda, the number is roughly the same with the last four years.
In 2024 there were a total of 111 doctors, which is roughly the annual average, in the last four years we've had the average 120 displaced doctors and is mostly the same trend in the last four years, we have no change. The difference is. In 2023 there were 167 who received evacuation records, some have left, some have regretted, no increase related to any reason. Usually when there are contests for professional schooling, that year it may be slightly smaller because they expect to receive specialization. It's mostly the same number, there's no factor that can be detected that increases this number”, he said, for the Blic newspaper.
According to Sejdiu, liberalisation has not affected the departure of doctors.
No, visa liberalisation hasn't affected at all, it has contributed to relief to find work because they go directly, it's much easier, either through electronic means or through someone, and there's no indicator to increase this number”, Sejdiu said.
And in doctors there is a trend that medical students in their last year of studies start with German language courses as preparation to leave for Europe
It's a high figure because according to the data for approximately a year, they graduate about 160 students and we have about 60 percent young doctors leaving because the majority leaving are them, young people. We have a lot of data from different organizations that they know, but also the student organization of the Faculty of Medicine, that somewhere in the 5th year, only that they start going to German courses, that is. They prepare that as soon as they're licensed and German courses are ready to leave. So this is a huge number given the next 3-4 generations, we have a 90-95 retirement rate and we're immediately at their minus, given that 1015 doctors die prematurely or retire”, he adds.
Streats Sejdiu cites reasons why doctors leave Kosovo
When they apply to Oda for membership, and when they want to go to relevant states they fill out a form and we know the reasons they're leaving, and the main reasons are doctors' unemployment, we have hundreds of unemployed doctors in Kosovo, then quality of professional study and the third is pay, it's known that young doctors have about 700 euros wages, and when we know that most of them are in age when they get married, they create families, they need a home, it's insufficient for them. These are the reasons and must be invested to reduce the number of those”, Sejdiu declares.
He criticises the state that hasn't taken any steps to lower this trend
Now the 7 years we've been monitoring this, there's not a step taken, not a concrete one, that's measurable to lower this trend because it can't stop but its number can be reduced. We have made proposals even in writing, ministers in turn but nothing has been done. The first thing to do is hire them”, points to Stables Sejdiu.
