Voldymyr Zelensky, who was democratically elected president of Ukraine in May 2019, was asked today if he would be willing to “hand over” from this position in exchange for peace
“Yes, I am happy if it is for the peace of Ukraine”, he said at the press conference, reports The Guardian.
If you need me to leave this chair, I am ready to do this, and I can also exchange it with NATO membership for Ukraine”, Zelensky said.
His comments came after US President Donald Trump called him an election-free “dictator” early in the week.
Zelensky added he wanted to see Trump as Ukraine's partner and more than just a mediator between Kyiv and Moscow.
“I really want it to be more than just mediating... that's not good enough”, he said. His comments come as political leaders in Europe fear Ukraine is being sidelined in US talks with Russia to end the war.
Ukrainian legislation bans elections during military law, which has been in force since Russia began its invasion in February 2022.
