“I hope we finish this year”, he said, responding to a Norwegian journalist, while adding that it has been very difficult for the whole nation.
Zelensky has added that Ukraine needs security guarantees to prevent Russia's return in the years ahead.
He has said that the quick union in the European Union and NATO would be of great help.
Zelensky recently said he would resign as president of Ukraine if his country is admitted to NATO.
Asked about relations with US President Donald Trump, Zelensky has not commented, but has added he hopes that “The U.S. will continue its support like all partners”.
“should not lose this unity between Europe and the US”, he said.
And European Commission President Ursula von der Leyeen said Ukraine could be allowed to join the EU before 2030.
Von der Leyen said that if the country continues with the current “acceleration” then it could be accepted earlier than in 2030.
As for lifting sanctions on Russia, Von Der Leeyen said it would happen until Russia is committed to lasting peace.
The summit Monday in Kiev is organised by Zelensky on the anniversary of the war in Ukraine, with Western leaders staying in Ukraine.
