Muhsin Hendricks, known as the world's first gay imam, has been shot to death near the town of Gceberha in South Africa.
Hendricks, who led a mosque that offered a safe space to the gay Muslims and the marginalised ones, was in a car with another person when two masked suspects stopped and started firing. Hendricks, who was sitting back in the car, lost his life in the country from his wounds.
Police have launched investigations and confirmed that the murder may have been deliberate, seeking information from those who may know something about the event. The motives of the murder are not known yet, but the possibility of a crime of hatred is possible, according to reactions from LGBTQ+ organisations.
Hendricks had been a strong advocate of community rights LGBTQ+ and had opened the Al-Ghurbaah mosque in Wynberg, which offered a safe space for this community.
He was also the subject of a documentary titled “The Radical”, and had mentioned several times the threats he had received. Hendricks had openly announced his sexual orientation in 1996 and had helped Muslims LGBTQ+ create spaces where they could practice Islam without being judged. /tch
