Speaking at a press conference after the meeting, Fidan said Turkey's EU membership negotiations have been halted because of the bloc's Islamist views, Euronews reports.
The European Union is near us, but negotiations have frozen due to Union's reluctance to accept a predominantly Muslim country in its ranks as a result of policies involving its identity. Nobody says that open, but it's true”, Fidan said.
Last year, Turkey sought to join the BRICS grouping, which is currently headed by Russia, aimed at strengthening ties with both the East and the West. But the chief of Turkish diplomacy stressed that the country has not yet been extended an official invitation.
He praised the organisation where other powers, such as China and India, are part of the EU. Various from the European Union, BICS is very comprehensive. It includes countries of all religious faiths, cultures, and civilizations, which are made together with the aim of creating a platform. I hope that an institutionalised and inclusive approach in the economic aspect will develop even here”, Fidan stressed.
Last September, Fidan said Turkey would not seek membership in the BRUC if the country is guaranteed EU membership.
