President Donald Trump said Wednesday that it will not be the United States, but Europe that will provide security guarantees to Ukraine.
President Trump made comments during his first meeting with members of his cabinet in response to a question of journalists if the agreement between Washington and Kiev on minerals contains security guarantees for Ukraine.
On Tuesday, officials of the two countries announced they have agreed on a draft agreement enabling Washington access to rare minerals in Ukraine, Euronews reports
Ukraine said today it had approved the Framework Agreement, but added that its success would depend on talks with President Donald Trump.
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that security guarantees which Kiev considers vital still remain to be determined.
He said that during his visit to Washington on Friday, there will be a broad and essential conversation with President Donald Trump.
President Trump confirmed on Wednesday that Mr. Zelenskiy will come to Washington on Friday, but said the United States would not offer broad security guarantees.
I will not provide broad security guarantees, we will ask Europe to do this”, said Mr. Trump.
A copy of the mineral draft agreement, viewed by the news agency Reuters on February 25th, said that the U.S. government supports Ukraine's efforts to obtain the security guarantees needed to establish lasting peace”.
The mineral deal is part of US President Trump's efforts to end the war between Ukraine and Russia as quickly as possible.
The American president proposed the deal and as a way for Kiev to repay billions of dollars in military aid received from Washington from the start of the war.
Mr. Trump also said that if an agreement is reached to end the conflict, a peacekeeping troop presence would be needed in Ukraine. But Moscow said on Tuesday it opposed the dislocation of a NATO force there.
