Volodymyr Zelensky is convinced that the United States does not want Ukraine to be part of NATO. His claim, Zelensky, set him up at the defence ministers' meeting held in Brussels.
“I told US President Donald Trump that security guarantees are obviously a priority for us and we don't see guarantees without you. What are they? Let's talk. I know Americans don't want us to be in NATO, to be honest. And it will be very difficult for us”, the Ukrainian president said.
Kiev and its European allies demanded that they be involved in any peace negotiations, as US President Donald Trump spoke by phone with Russia's Vladimir Putin and said Ukraine cannot return all its land, nor membership in NATO.
It is important that everything does not go according to the Russian president's plan, in which he wants to do everything to realise his bilateral negotiations between him and the United States of America. We, as a sovereign country, simply will not be able to accept any agreement without us. I believe Europeans should be on the table for talks because we are part of Europe and of course we will be members of the European Union”, he added.
Trump's unilateral step towards Putin, coupled with visible concessions for Ukraine's main demands, raised the alarm for both Kiev and European allies in NATO, who said they feared the White House could make an agreement without them.
German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius called for Europe to engage in negotiations. The “must be clear to all that we cannot sit at the children's table,” said Pistorius ahead of a meeting of NATO defence ministers in Brussels.
Meanwhile, Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz considers the debate over a potential Ukrainian peacekeeping force with Bundesehr participation early. Everyone knows that this is not a matter now,” said Scholz for “Politco” magazine.
It is not even clear under what conditions Ukraine would be willing to reconcile with a peace agreement.
At that, other German Bundestag deputies consider Trump's initiative to start negotiations with Vladimir Putin, without including European countries.
