US President Donald Trump said on Monday that there were “many geniuses” following the push of Elon Musk to ask each federal employee to present five points for what they did last week and noted the threat of firing people who did not comply.
This came just minutes before a government email told the heads of the agencies that the email request that went to 2 million federal employees was voluntary.
Trump's comments at the White House, with French President Emmanuel Macron, came after Musk's extraordinary call for federations to justify what they did last week, under threat of dismissal. Musk's movement prompted some of the first domestic reactions against DOGE leader within the Trump administration.
The new FBI director, Kash Patel and other heads of agencies told employees not to return to email. Trump himself, however, called the idea for the E - mail.
Email from a human resource address at the Staff Management Office began reaching millions of federal employees Saturday, causing uncertainty and conflicting statements by senior officials.
Giving his support Monday, Trump said: “Please tell us what you did last week. If people do not respond, it is very likely that they will not have such a person or work. And then if you don't answer, like you're half fired, or you're fired, because most people aren't responding because there's no such thing as”
Musk had posted on his X platform on Saturday: “All federal employees will soon receive an email seeking to understand what they did last week. The failure to respond will be taken out of”.
Trump seemed to support Musk's threat to fire people if they did not respect them.
Musk spent millions helping Trump be resolved and now heads the Government Efficiency Department, which is combing data agencies and pushing for downloads to reduce the size of bureaucracy.
The president also linked the issue to his plan to visit Fort Knox to inspect US gold supplies, an investigation also postponed by Musk.
WE're paying other people who don't work. Where did the money go? We've found hundreds of billions of dollars of fraud so far and we've just started”, he said.
And we're actually going to Fort Knox to see if the gold is there, because maybe someone stole gold tons of gold”, Trump said.
