Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenksy is expected to meet with United States President Donald Trump today and sign an agreement on critical minerals, while Kiev tries to regain United States support for facing the large-scale attack by Russia.
The mineral deal, negotiated over the last few days, would provide the United States with sound access to the rare Ukrainian underground minerals, but does not include providing security guarantees on the part of the United States, a disappointment for Ukraine.
The deal gives Washington the opportunity to compensate for a billion dollars that he has saved for Kiev's support with American weapons through an investment fund for reconstruction related to the sale of Ukraine's rare minerals.
According to a report last year by the Centre for Strategic and International Studies, about 2/ 3 of the funds approved by Congress for Ukraine have been spent in the United States.
Ukraine hopes the agreement will encourage President Trump to support Kiev's efforts to regain territories currently controlled by Russia.
The agreement could also secure support from Republicans in Congress for a new round of aid for the war-hit country.
President Trump has crashed in the distance with counterpart Zelensky over the past few weeks, criticising him for the way he managed the war, naming him a dictator and calling him to accept the mineral agreement.
But during the joint press conference with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Thursday, President Trump, questioned the statement concerning Mr. Zelensky's dictator, said: “did I say such a thing? I can't believe I'm saying that”
President Trump also noted he expected interest in meeting with President Zelenskkyy and praised the Ukrainian Army for their courage.
I believe we're working very hard to end the war. I think we've made a lot of progress and we're moving ahead at a speed of”, President Trump said.
Or this war will end soon, or it will never end”, He added, but without further reasoning. / VOA
