Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has supported Volodymyr Zelensky as a democraticly elected “leader” after Donald Trump described Ukrainian President as a “dictator”.
Sir Keir called Zelensky on Wednesday evening and told him that it was “fully reasonable” that Ukraine of “held elections during wartime as Great Britain did during World War II”, Downing Street said.
The American president had earlier criticised Zelensky, saying he had done a terrible “ -- x1> -- and claiming that “ai refuses to have elections” in Ukraine.
Zelenski's five-year term was to end in May 2024, but elections have been suspended since military law was declared after Russia's invasion.
Meanwhile, Sir Keir will travel to Washington DC next week for his first personal meeting with Trump.
The prime minister has said he wants to use his meeting next week to discuss a US <x0backstop” that he says is necessary to prevent Russia from attacking Ukraine again.
