As he declared his party's victory in Sunday's parliamentarys, Albin Kurti voiced confidence that the Vetevendosje Movement will succeed in creating Kosovo's next government.
It even seems that the scenario of an opposition vote union does not scare him at all.
But the figures, so far, are not the source of as much enthusiasm as four years ago, when the route to executive creation gave him a comfortable level of votes of over 50%. Many experts think the man seeking another ruling mandate could be forced to compromise for the coalition. But why did this contraction of support for him and his political strength come?
During his first mandate, Kurti promised government focused on transparency and accountability while at the same time insisting on the importance of preserving national sovereignty. Despite that, his government has found itself in reports of the US State Department for government corruption, or Reporters Without Borders on restricting media freedom.
Since 2021, the unemployment trend has been on the decline, economic growth is estimated at below 4 percent, and there has been increased foreign direct investment. But what Kurt's second rule has most deeply defined has been something else: his determination to expand Kosovo's authority in the country's north, where the majority is Serb and for years has not obeyed the decisions of official Pristina. Despite this community's opposition, Kurti placed Albanian mayors in the direction of Serb majority municipalities, replaced Serbian license plates with Kosovo license plates, removed the Serbian dinar from use and shut down most of Serbia's institutions, which employed thousands.
All these movements, they were in line with his vision of a sovereign and united Kosovo, remember the experts, but they came at a very high cost to international alliances, producing as rarely a public counter against Kosovo on the part of the EU and the US itself. Kosovo currently faces measures from the European bloc, dialogue has stalled in the deadlock, while young people think the focus should not be so much in Serbia alone, but also in other issues of concern to them, including the economy. /Topchannel
