Scholz told parliament ahead of the February 23rd elections that he would never co-operate with the extreme right, and accused Merz of breaking his promise after the Alternative to Germany ( AfD) backed its initiative for migration and security last month, breaking promises to co-operate with the extreme right, Reuters reported.
Merz responded to Scholz, saying co-operation with the AfID was completely out of the question for him and responsible for increasing the popularity of the AfD coalition, which, according to him, “after his failure in November, implemented left policies against the obvious will of the citizens”.
AfD is currently in second place in the polls, ahead of Scholz's Social Democratic Party (SPD), while the CDU bloc/ Merz's CSU could win more votes.
According to the latest INSA poll, CDU/ CSU and AfD each won a percentage point, reaching 30 percent and 22 percent respectively, while the SDP fell to 15.5.
All political actors are excluding the possibility of forming the coalition with the AfD, which means talks on forming the government can continue after the elections. /euronews
