On Monday evening Santorini has been hit by another violent earthquake measuring 5.3 steps.
As the most powerful quakes felt on February 6th, as they spread to” to Crete, Athens, and even parts of Turkey.
So far, more than 10,000 residents and tourists have abandoned the island, schools and other institutions are reportedly closed.
The head of the Organisation for Planning and Protection from Earthquake has spoken of an unprecedented phenomenon, stressing that <x0 seismic activity has nothing to do with volcanic processes”.
While a major scientific team is analyzing data from ground and underwater seismographers to determine whether there is a connection between volcanic and tectonic earthquakes.
At the same time, the first data from two seismographs to be extracted from the area is also expected.
Experts are even installing 8 new seismographs of modern technology around Columbo's underwater volcano.
This is an unprecedented research mobilization to analyze and assess the phenomenon.
As for the tourist season and the possibility of it being influenced by ongoing seismic activity, experts point out that the scientific community will assess when it can say with certainty that the danger has decreased.
So far, the quakes have not caused serious damage, however, special attention is paid to structures located on the edge of Caldera, the island's most tourist part.
Authorities have declared the state of emergency situation in Santorini, and emergency teams are already on the verge of facing any possible disasters soon.
