Fox News reports that possible conditions for a deal between Kiev and Moscow were discussed at the meeting, which includes a ceasefire, new elections in Ukraine and a peace agreement.

State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce confirmed that the American team agreed to set the stage for co-operation with Russia on various issues, including the creation of high-level teams to advance the peace process.

One of the key elements discussed was holding new elections in Ukraine, with the assumption that the current president, Volodymyr Zelensky, is likely to be re-elected.

Moscow believes another candidate would be more flexible and more willing for negotiations.

Zelensky, for his part, has rejected any agreement without direct involvement in Ukraine. In a phone call with Donald Trump last week, he asked the former American president not to trust Vladimir Putin, naming him a “for lying”.

The absence of European representatives in Tuesday's talks has sparked reactions, especially after US Vice President JD Vance's criticism of European allies at the Munich Security Conference.

British Prime Minister Kier Starmer has indicated that the United Kingdom is ready to deploy troops in Ukraine to ensure security as part of a peace agreement.
