The European Union office has marked International NGO Day today, providing news that there are over 880m euros available for implementation of the Kosovo Reforms Agency
EU Ambassador to Kosovo Aivo Ora stressed the importance of civil society and media organisations in empowering democracy and Kosovo's European integration process.
He praised their role as key partners and stressed that Kosovo is lucky to have them.
“Today we are here, on World NGO Day, to give the rightful importance to organisations that are driven by public interest and common good, those who bring social change and who need the rights and welfare of the population. Today we have invited organisations that received a grant from the EU in 2024. However, the EU has supported a large number of civil society and media organisations over the past two decades. Inevitably, you are also an invaluable partner in Kosovo's EU membership process, not least for the fact that you have an extraordinary ability to feel the pulse and needs of society at any time. Kosovo is lucky to have you”, he has declared.
Orar also expressed awareness of the impact of suspending US aid to the NGO sector in Kosovo.
He cited the EU Growth Plan, which includes 880m euros for reforms in Kosovo, announcing that after ratification by the Parliament, the EU will issue a pre-finance of 7% of the total amount.
I am aware that the American administration's surprising decision to suspend much of its assistance worldwide has a major impact on important programmes implemented by the NGO sector in Kosovo. To do this, we have presented the Development Plan, which encourages EU-related reforms. Over 880m euros are available for implementation of the Kosovo Reforms Agency. After ratification of financing agreements and loans from the Kosovo Assembly, The EU will issue pre-finance of up to 7% of the total amount apologised”, Orav stressed. / EO
