The American side has said that today's meeting has nothing to do with starting negotiations, but to see if Russia is “serious” in ending the war in Ukraine.
The Russian side, on the other hand, has said the priority will have normalisation of relations with the US, Radio Free Europe report.
The American side consists of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, National Security Adviser Mike Waltz and US Special Envoy for the Middle East Steve Wikoff.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Yuri Usshakov, Russian President Vladimir Putin's foreign policy adviser, represent Russia.
The February 18th Riyadh meeting takes place after the intensifying of Washington's efforts to end the nearly three-year war in Ukraine, although tactics have shaken diplomatic circles in Kiev and Europe, since there is uncertainty about the kind of agreement that can be reached in the future with the aim of ending the war.
“This is learned to be the first step in the long negotiation process, but things are moving quickly”, said Nigel Gould-Davids, former British diplomat who is currently senior researcher at the International Institute for Strategic Studies, in some response to Radio Free Europe.
“There is a translation that will continue to advance in these times of uncertainty”.
