A knife attack in the town of Villach, near the border with Italy and Slovenia, has left a 14-year-old man dead and injured five more people. Two of the wounded are in serious condition.
Police arrested the suspect, a 23-year-old Syrian, asylum seekers with temporary residence permits at the scene. So far, the motive of the attack remains unclear, but authorities have included extremist specialists in the investigation.
The incident occurred on Saturday, about 4: 00 p.m. at local time. A shipping worker, also of Syrian origin, helped prevent the attackers from crashing him in his car. Police immediately arrested the aggressor, who was still being interrogated until the evening.
Initially, it was reported to a second assailant, leading to the provisional closure of railway transport, but police confirmed that it was only one author.
The event has sparked political debates in Austria on asylum policies. The far right leader, Herbet Kickl, called for tougher measures for asylum seekers, while regional governor Peter Kaiser condemned the act but warned against spreading hatred. The attack comes at a tense political moment, with the country still in uncertainty about forming the government after the last elections. /euronews
